Non-exclusive license
A non-exclusive license grants permission to use a work while leaving the owner free to grant the same permission to anyone else. Splice Sounds licences and standard beat leases are non-exclusive, so many people can legitimately use the same material.
A non-exclusive licence is permission that is not scarce. The owner keeps the right to license the same thing to as many other people as they want, and every licensee's use is equally legitimate. It is the default shape of almost everything a bedroom producer touches: Splice Sounds downloads, loop libraries, standard beat leases, most stock music.
The consequence people find hardest to accept is that duplication is not infringement. Splice's own licensing terms make the point directly — the licence is non-exclusive, so you own your composition but not the sound, and another producer building a completely different track on the identical loop has done nothing wrong. You cannot issue a takedown against them and they cannot issue one against you.
That has a practical downstream effect on registration and monetisation. If you register a track built on a widely-used loop with YouTube Content ID, you risk claiming revenue on other people's videos that legitimately use the same source material. Content ID reference material should be your original arrangement, and platforms and distributors will remove you from monetisation programmes for false claims.
Non-exclusive is also what makes beat leasing a volume business. A producer can lease the same instrumental to many artists, each of whom gets a real licence with defined limits — usage caps, term, credit requirements — and none of whom gets to stop the others.
The misunderstanding: paying for a non-exclusive licence and believing the material is now "yours." What is yours is the new work you made. The underlying material stays the licensor's, and stays available to everyone else.
